Proper Wheelchair Prescription and Assessment promotes comfort during upright activities of daily living (ADLs); Promotes physiological maintenance and tissue protection through prevention of shearing; Promotes sensory readiness through provision of proper eye and head position.                                                                                                            

Appropriate wheelchair assessment facilitates upper limb function which occurs with proper trunk support; Promotes social acceptance by allowing eye contact; Decreases progression of deformity through customized seating as needed (see custom seating below); Decreases pain through provision of proper support to all limbs; Facilitates mobility with what means the person with a physical challenge has availability; and Increases self-esteem through provision of a wheelchair which meets the person’s needs and facilitates mastery of the environment.

Walkers improve stability in those with lower extremity weakness or poor balance and facilitate improved mobility by increasing the patient’s base of support and supporting the patient’s weight. Walkers require greater attentional demands than canes and make using stairs difficult.

Mobility broadly refers to movements that result in change of body position and location”. (Kane and Buckley, 1998, p. 205). Functional mobility prerequisite to perform self-care, work/school and leisure tasks and activities. (Pedretti, 1990).
